This course is an introduction to the fascinating world of communicating in BSL – British Sign Language.
It covers fingerspelling, greetings, asking and answering questions, colours and more, including the weather (well, it is British sign language).

There are videos for you to watch, reference sheets to remind you of the signs, printables to help you practise and online quizzes to help you check your understanding.

Each lesson has a video showing the vocabulary and concepts which you will learn.

Each video starts with BSL only; this is then followed, after the logo, by the same message in BSL with subtitles.

As BSL has a different grammar to English you may be surprised by the subtitles; they are a direct translation of the new signs and not an English translation of the message.

As you work through the lessons, do take the time to practise forming the signs yourself. At the end of each lesson there is a short quiz to test your understanding.

At the end of the course there is a ‘superquiz’ covering all the topics which you have learnt.

The estimated guided learning time for this course is 3 hours; this does not include personal practice time.

Great intro

Super great intro to BSL! I'm Deaf American and moving to UK it was great learning especially the numbers and fingerspelling is very different than ASL now I feel more prepared!

Good content

This course is good. The videos are easy to follow and it's a good way to learn basic vocab. I don't think the drag and drop quiz format work well on a phone. The play and pause icon hide the videos and you have to click to make the screen bigger and then reduce it again. It's a bit of a faff. There were no instructions either and it took me a while to work it out. It worked better on the lap top.

really good!

really good, course, i was suprised how fast it goes in. I have a good undertsnding of bsl now to begin the next level. I woould like to become better at signing, so may need to find some people to talk to in person but this is amazing for learning to understand it!

Enjoyable

Learning BSL from scratch was a daunting prospect, but this course means that you can go at your own pace. You can revise, and redo the quiz if you are unhappy with your results. Probably best done on a laptop or computer rather tha. My iPad as I had a few issues moving answer boxes into place, but this was a minor issue....Thank you😀

Most user friendly

It's great fun. You can learn when you feel like it and at your own pace. I just go over the lessons when I have a bit of spare time to keep it fresh. You can access the course materials whenever you want, 24/7 so you can be sure you're getting it right. Great stuff, and good value for money too. Peter

Forget the textbooks........

If you want to be able to learn BSL, then look no further! The course material is straight forward with no pressure. If you fail the quiz, just take it again!!!! I have enjoyed every moment of the Taster, Deaf Awareness and Introduction to BSL courses. I can't wait to put it all into practice!!

A Brilliant Start

I have already started picking bits out when I see sign language on the TV! I would highly recommend the course to anyone; the videos are clear, the downloadable pdf resources are really useful (I like the fact they are available for both right & left handed), and the quizzes get gradually harder, applying previous knowledge & building confidence as you go along. It was well-worth the cost.
